OPENING HOURS

The Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, with last admission at 5.00 pm. They are closed on Mondays and on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 June and 25 December.

Between 9.30 am and 10.30 am, Jerónimos Monastery has a dedicated admission channel for groups accompanied by guides and holding tickets for this time slot, for short visits during this period.

The Church of Jerónimos Monastery is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm, with last admission at 5.00 pm, except on Sundays. On Sundays, the Church opens to the public at 2.00 pm.

The two monuments may not close before 5.30 pm, except in cases of force majeure.

The monuments' opening hours are displayed on an information board outside each building.

The following situations are exceptions to the monuments' normal opening hours:

Special visits;

Sociocultural events;

Preparatory visits for protocol purposes;

Official and protocol events;

Religious ceremonies.

ACCESS CONDITIONS

For reasons of heritage protection and visitor safety:

Jerónimos Monastery admits a maximum of 3,500 visitors per day.

A maximum of 300 visitors may be present simultaneously in the Cloister of Jerónimos Monastery.

A maximum of 200 visitors may be present simultaneously in the Church of Jerónimos Monastery.

Belém Tower admits a maximum of 960 visitors per day.

A maximum of 60 visitors may be present simultaneously in Belém Tower.

Admission to Jerónimos Monastery/Belém Tower is subject to the purchase of tickets of different types and prices:

Tickets may be purchased at the physical ticket office located in the kiosk in the area opposite Jerónimos Monastery, for both monuments, or online (via the official Jerónimos Monastery/Belém Tower website and the website of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, E.P.E.), with a specific date and time for the visit.

The admission time slots for Jerónimos Monastery are as follows: 9.30–10.30 am; 10.30–11.30 am; 11.30 am–12.30 pm; 12.30–1.30 pm; 1.30–2.30 pm; 2.30–3.30 pm; and 3.30–5.00 pm.

The admission time slots for Belém Tower are as follows: 9.30–9.59 am; 10.00–10.29 am; 10.30–10.59 am; 11.00–11.29 am; 11.30–11.59 am; 12.00–12.29 pm; 12.30–12.59 pm; 1.00–1.29 pm; 1.30–1.59 pm; 2.00–2.29 pm; 2.30–2.59 pm; 3.00–3.29 pm; 3.30–3.59 pm; 4.00–4.29 pm; and 4.30–5.00 pm.

Admission control for all tickets is carried out digitally, using an optical reader based on a QR code or barcode.

Any change to the face value of tickets is the responsibility of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, E.P.E. (MMP).

VISITOR ACCESS

Visitors carrying suitcases, trolleys, large backpacks or other large items are not permitted to enter.

Animals are not permitted, with the exception of assistance dogs accompanying people with sensory, mental, organic or physical disabilities, as provided for in Decree-Law No. 74/2007 of 27 March.

Visitors are not permitted to enter with food or drink, or to smoke.

Children under 12 years of age may not visit unless accompanied by an adult.

On rainy days at Jerónimos Monastery, wet umbrellas must be left in the secure, key-operated umbrella stand located in the ticket-control area outside the monument.

Prams, wheelchairs and other mobility aids are not permitted on the first floor of the Cloister of Jerónimos Monastery or on the terrace of the Belém Tower bastion.

Professional photographic equipment and other image- or sound-recording devices may not be brought into or used within the monument without prior authorisation from the Management.

Persons not employed by the institution may not enter without prior authorisation and/or being accompanied by the responsible senior member of staff.

DISCOUNTS AND EXEMPTIONS

Certain ticket categories are eligible for reduced or free admission, as established by Order No. 13793/2024, published in the Diário da República No. 226 of 21 November 2024.

All citizens resident in Portugal are entitled to free admission on 52 days per year, of their choice, upon presentation of a document containing their Portuguese Tax Identification Number (NIF). These tickets are available only at the physical ticket office. At Belém Tower, they are also available through the online ticket office.

On International Day for Monuments and Sites (18 April), International Museum Day (18 May), and during European Heritage Days (September), admission is free, subject to the instructions issued by the supervisory authority, Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, E.P.E.

Admission to the Church of Jerónimos Monastery is free of charge. Should this result in an exceptional influx of visitors, the Management of the Jerónimos Monastery/Belém Tower institution reserves the right, where necessary, to regulate and/or limit visitor access.

Requests for free visits may be submitted to the institution, provided that they are duly justified and are always subject to consideration by the Management, which will make the final decision.

VISITOR RULES

During the visit to the monument, the following are prohibited:

Smoking;

Eating or drinking;

Running, climbing, sitting or lying down in the monument's spaces, particularly on the benches on the lower floor and on the steps;

Touching heritage structures;

Leaving belongings on the floor (clothing, backpacks, handbags, etc.) in a way that compromises the integrity of the space or visitor safety;

Using the benches on the lower floor of the Cloister;

Leaving the galleries to access the central area of the Cloister;

Failing to comply with the admission regulations;

Speaking loudly or engaging in any other behaviour that compromises other visitors' enjoyment of the monument;

Visitors may take photographs, but without flash, using non-professional equipment and without causing any disturbance in the areas open to visitors. Photo shoots are not permitted. Photographs may only be taken for personal use;

The use of selfie sticks, tripods or any other stabilisation equipment is not permitted;

Video recording requires prior authorisation;

Visitors must respect the privacy of monument staff, who must not be photographed without their consent;

Photography is subject to restrictions because the monuments' primary priorities remain the conservation of the spaces, visitors' enjoyment, the smooth and comfortable flow of visits, and the safety of all visitors.

TYPES OF VISIT

At both monuments, visits may be undertaken independently or as guided visits;

Independent visits are intended for the general public;

Guided visits are provided for school groups organised by schools or other educational institutions, as well as for specific visitor groups and/or official entities.

SPECIAL VISITS – OUTSIDE NORMAL OPENING HOURS

Special visits may take place outside the normal opening hours of Jerónimos Monastery under the following conditions:

Requests for special visits must be submitted 15 days in advance and authorised by the Monument's Management and by the Chair of the Board of Directors of Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, E.P.E.;

Special visits take place only in the Cloister;

Special visits are held from Tuesday to Friday, from 7.00 pm to 11.00 pm, subject to the institution's available resources;

Each visitor group must be accompanied by a professional guide;

The costs associated with this type of visit must be paid in advance by the requesting entity, namely:

The prior purchase from MMP of the “private visit” ticket, at a rate of €36.00 per person/hour, in accordance with point 5 of Order No. 13793/2024, published in Diário da República No. 226, Series II, of 21 November 2024;

The costs of overtime work – remuneration compensation – for technical assistants in the security sector, arising from the support and supervision provided during the visit;

The costs of maintaining/cleaning the toilet facilities, whenever necessary.
